<h2>Risk and Return</h2>
<p>Understanding the risk of your investments is essential to be a successful investor.</p>
<p>Both platforms offer investments in unsecured payday loans, meaning you are exposing yourself to <a href="https://p2pempire.com/en/is-peer-to-peer-lending-safe" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">various P2P lending risks</a>.</p>
<p>We should examine the protection systems that both platforms provide.</p>
<h3>Platform Risk</h3>
<p>Esketit is registered in Ireland while operating from Latvia. The platform has been launched by two professionals who also founded Creamfinance (Avafin), a lending group that made over &euro;8M in profits in 2022.</p>
<p>Mintos was founded by Martins Sulte in 2015, and multiple other investors who were seeking to fund its loans on Mintos. While many lenders keep growing their market share, Mintos hasn't been profitable in the past few years.</p>
<p>Both platforms offer similar protection of users' accounts, including 2FA. Mintos is even regulated in Latvia as an investment firm.</p>
<h3>Lender Risk&nbsp;</h3>
<p>The amount you earn from your investment depends on <strong>how well the loan portfolio performs and how well the loan originator manages the associated risks</strong> when you lend them your money.</p>
<p>Both companies Esketit and Mintos publish financial reports from their lending partners.</p>
<p>Note, however, that Mintos doesn't have live access into the performance of the entire loan book of their partners, whereas Esketit does.</p>
<p>Esketit is currently funding only loans originating from lending companies founded by the founders of Esketit, which means that Esketit always has access to the performance of the loan book.</p>
<p>This is crucial as the platform can increase or decrease the funding limit of particular lenders based on their portfolio performance and shield investors from potentially increased risks.</p>
<p>Mintos has mostly only insights into data that the lender is willing to share with the marketplace.</p>
<p>Should a lender's portfolio deteriorate, Mintos won't be able to see it early on, and investors will unknowingly invest into the loans, which may be performing worse than expected, potentially increasing the risk of a suspension.</p>
<p>When a lender on Mintos is suspended, investors can no longer sell their investments on the secondary market. Any promises of buyback or group guarantees might not be honored, hence the lender risk is significantly higher on Mintos.</p>
<h3>Business Models</h3>
<p>Esketit's purpose is to provide funding for the loan originators owned by the founders of Esketit. The platform doesn't have to be profitable, as that's not the purpose of Esketit. The money is made by the lenders, not the platform.</p>
<p>While the same might apply to Mintos, the platform's operation is much bigger, meaning higher overhead costs.</p>
<p>It's difficult for investors to estimate the impact of Mintos' losses on the company's strategy, as the platform is also funding loans from third-party lenders who are not shareholders of Mintos.</p>
<p>Mintos receives a <strong>fee based on the funding volumes</strong> that the platform can provide, so it may be in the <strong>platform's interest to fund as many loans</strong> as possible to become profitable again eventually.</p>
<p>This means the platform might take <strong>additional levels of risk to generate revenue</strong>. At the end of the day, the <strong>default risk is carried by the investors</strong> and not the platform, which can be seen as a conflict of interest.</p>
<h3>Borrower Risk</h3>
<p>The borrower risk on both platforms is mitigated by the buyback obligation, which is a promise by the lending company to repurchase your investment should the borrower be delayed with its payments for more than 60 days.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The borrower risk isn't that important for investors in normal market conditions. As long as the buyback guarantee is honored, investors won't be impacted by defaulted loans.</p>
<p>Should the <strong>lender decide not the honor the buyback guarantee</strong>, chances are that they stop repaying all investors.</p>
<p>The level of borrower risk depends on the lender's risk appetite and underwriting policies in various markets.</p>
<p>Microloan lenders are often very aggressive in new markets to gain market share, which exposes them to high levels of borrower risk.</p>
<p>Investors should exercise caution when investing in new lending companies as they might not have the track record and proper risk management in new markets.</p>
<p>This is very relevant for investors on Mintos, as many of the lending companies are suspended and over &euro;115M of investors' funds is currently "in recovery".</p>
<h3>Return</h3>
<p>While Mintos promotes an attractive average return of more than 12%, the real return for broadly diversified portfolios is likely much lower due to pending payments and non-performing loans from suspended lenders.</p>
<p>Esketit, on the other hand, is much more reliable when it comes to the interest paid out to your investment account.</p>
<p>You can expect to earn 12%, almost hassle-free, without any pending payments or funds in recovery. Additionally, you can increase your return when investing larger amounts as Esketit offers an attractive loyalty program.</p>
<h2>Liquidity</h2>
<p>Both platforms offer a secondary market. To sell loans on Mintos, sellers will pay a 2% secondary market fee.</p>
<p>While Mintos also offers a quick cash-out option, this works only during normal market conditions. Loans from suspended lenders cannot be sold on Mintos.</p>
<p>On Esketit, you can sell your investment with a premium or discount on the secondary market or use automated strategies to cash-out your investment within a few hours, depending on your investment amount.</p>
<p>There are no secondary market fees on Esketit.</p>
<h2>Support</h2>
<p>Both platforms offer decent support for retail investors.</p>
<p>Remember, however, that Mintos is a marketplace, and it won't be able to give you more advanced answers on loan recoveries as it lacks live information from the lenders.</p>
